Manchester Airport - Drop-off Update

Manchester Airport has seen a significant increase in passenger volumes in the past five years and is investing heavily in further growth and improvements to the customer experience, most notably through its £1bn Transformation Programme. This growth, coupled with imposed restrictions on forecourt capacity and an inability to increase available space, led to extreme congestion on the forecourts and surrounding estate, having a huge impact on operations and service levels. The forecourts were simply not designed to handle the current volume of vehicles that they do, and the airport could not accommodate any further growth in this drop-off traffic.

The drop-off charges brought in on 10th July 2018 are £3 for five minutes and £4 for 10 minutes on the terminal forecourts. There are no permitted stays longer than 10 minutes. The system involves ANPR on entry and a barrier system out with payment taken at the barrier by card or cash. Blue badge holders can access the forecourt areas free of charge for drop-off, on production of a blue badge to the traffic marshals.

The airport has created a dedicated free drop-off site away from the forecourt areas, where passengers are transported free of charge to their terminal on dedicated shuttle services. Shuttle services operate every 15 minutes, with journey times ranging from five minutes to Terminal 2 and seven minutes to Terminals 1 and 3.  The free shuttle services are available 24 hours a day and marshals are on hand to assist. There is a help point in the free drop-off location for anybody wishing to use the free drop-off and in need of assistance, or for those who have booked assistance but don’t have a blue badge and would like to drop-off free of charge.

The changes that have been introduced only impact those dropping-off. The process for picking-up passengers remains the same – passengers can be picked-up in the arrivals car parks and multi-storey car parks with a charge of £4 for 30 minutes.

There is a discount scheme for private hire operators who are frequent users of Manchester Airport, which apply to both the forecourts and the car parks.  This scheme already existed for pick-up within the multi-storey car parks and is now in place for discounted access to the forecourts for drop-off.

Since the new forecourt management system came into effect in July 2018, the airport has seen congestion reduce on the forecourts.
